LINCOLN, NE, May 17, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mary L. Hepburn O'Shea, Chief Executive Officer and Owner of Organizational Unit Responsibility Homes, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in assisted living services.
While attending high school, Ms. Hepburn O'Shea was taken to visit a state hospital for the mentally ill by her sociology teacher. Heartbroken by the conditions she witnessed, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Following her completion of a bachelor's degree in sociology and Master of Science in social work from The University of Kansas, she established the Organizational Unity Responsibility Homes. She began with eight people who had been hospitalized 20 to 40 years living in her own home. With the support of her late husband, who served as the director of family services, the business grew; she now oversees a total of 300 residents and three adult care centers with 180 clients. In addition, she raises extra funding for the organization by displaying her 1,500-doll collection in a mansion that is open to the public between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.
Now celebrating her 50th year in operation, Ms. Hepburn O'Shea has documented her inspirational experiences in three books, "Come Live with Me," "Caught in the Middle," and "Laugh, Love and Sex in Assisted Living." A member of the board of directors of the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and the Mental Retardation Association of Nebraska, Inc., she was honored with a Hero Award from the American Red Cross in 2009. Attributing her success to her perseverance, Ms. Hepburn O'Shea looks forward to turning her business over to her family in the future and continuing to improve the lives of others.
