"Since I was a child, I have been visiting and enjoying the mountains," recalls Mr. Gubrud, who now retains 40 years of experience in forest management. A true environmentalist, he evinces expert-level wildland fire prevention and forestry services, which he developed in such roles as administrator and supervisor of the Vegetation Management Program and Forestry Conservation Unit for the County of Los Angeles Fire Department. With an extensive work history, he has spent the past decade in a consultative role, advising emerging professionals on the environmental applications of forestry and pesticides.
Previously, Mr. Gubrud was a supervisor and trainer for the Lake Hughes Forestry Unit and the Henninger Flats Forestry Unit, after working as an administrator and supervisor of field operations for the Forestry Environmental Review Unit, the supervisor of field operations and the forestry nursery for the Saugus and Lake Hughes Forestry Units, among several others. Mr. Gubrud established his career in the United States Forestry Service in 1972. In 1974, he experienced the highlight of his career: being hired to plant trees and build roads around Castaic Lake.
A certified professional forester, state-contracted archaeologist, and state-licensed forester, Mr. Gubrud has aligned his comprehensive experience with his education. He has been a licensed pesticide applicator since 2001, a certified forest silviculturist since 2000 and a licensed educator in forestry field and nursery techniques since 1992. After graduating from Humboldt State University in 1972, with a Bachelor of Science in forest management, Mr. Gubrud completed coursework in agricultural resource forestry and obtained a Master of Science in forestry science and urban forestry from California Polytechnic State University. His educational foundation gave him a platform from which he propelled his career and pursued his passion in forestry.
Mr. Gubrud is a life member of the California State Firefighters Association and the Southern California Foresters and Firewardens. In 2008 and 2009, he served the California Society of American Foresters as its president. Additionally, he was awarded a certificate of appreciation in erosion control programs from the Antelope Valley Resources Conservation District Program in 1993, and a certificate of completion in command and general staff from Crafton Hills College in the same year.
