Track and Field News: Oxygen4Energy Athlete Kellie Wells Wins National Championship and Keeps #1 World Ranking

Oxygen4Energy Athlete Kellie Wells wins the 2011 Outdoor National Championship with a new World Leading Time of 12.50 seconds in the 100m Hurdles.

LAKE FOREST, CA, June 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When Oxygen4Energy Athlete Kellie Wells got to Eugene, Oregon this past week, she had only one thing on her mind... winning a national championship. She knew that all of the nation's top competitors would also be there gunning for the title, but she was definitely up for the challenge.

So far this year, Kellie has been the most dominant figure in women's hurdles by tying an American Record (55m Hurdles), winning the Indoor National Title, running multiple World Lead times, winning the first Diamond League event, and never finishing worse than 2nd place in any race she entered. With such strong performances all season long, some in the sport wondered if she had peaked too soon and would be able to continue running at such a high level through Outdoor Nationals.

On Sunday, in front of thousands of fans, Kellie silenced all of her critics and left no doubt in anyone's mind that she deserves to be the World's #1.

In the first round, Kellie ran a wind aided 12.53 seconds that let her competitors know that she meant business. In the semi-finals, she ran even faster with a wind-aided 12.51 seconds. In the other heats, her top competitors Danielle Carruthers (another Oxygen4Energy athlete) and Dawn Harper also made it through to the finals with a noteworthy absence of Lolo Jones.

The stage was set for the top 3 hurdlers in the country to face off in the finals. What made this race even more exciting was that the only two people Kellie had lost to so far this season were Dawn Harper and Danielle Carruthers, and those loses had come recently in the few weeks leading up to Outdoor Nationals. In addition, Danielle ran a wind-aided 12.37 seconds in the semis, which is the fastest time recorded in the World this year.

As the competitors were called to the starting line, the whole stadium became quiet, anxiously awaiting what everyone knew would be an incredible race. After a false start by Yvette Lewis that added even more drama to the situation, everyone was called back to the line and the race was set to go.

12.50 seconds after the gun went off, Kellie Wells crossed the finish line first as the National Champion with a new personal record and World Lead time.

According to Oxygen4Energy President, Craig Inaba, "Kellie has worked so hard this season with her coach Dennis Mitchell. She has risen to the occasion time and time again when it mattered most and put forth her best performances on the biggest stages. She is a true champion. For us to know that Kellie believes so strongly in our product and that it has contributed in some way to helping her become the best athlete she can possibly be is very gratifying for us."

In 2 months, Kellie will be off to Daegu, Korea for the World Championships where she hopes to bring home a Gold medal representing the United States.
