WEST BARNSTABLE, MA, July 14, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joy Indomenico, MT-BC, FAMI, Music Therapist and Owner of In-Harmony Music Therapy, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Music Therapy. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.

Ms. Indomenico has 40 years of professional experience, including work with special school populations, psychiatric hospitals and private institutions. Now, as the owner of her company, In-Harmony Music Therapy, she has combined her skills to offer hope of healing through music and works with very special cases that are referred to her. A board-certified music therapist, Ms. Indomenico treats children and adults by developing individualized programs to teach them how to communicate, learn social skills and discover themselves and their roles as contributing members of society. Some patients are able to manage their pain through their involvement in making music using drums, a keyboard, bass guitars, dulcimers, and singing. She also works with families as a unit, thereby working with mothers, fathers and siblings, too. Reiki techniques to aid the healing process are utilized as requested by the person experiencing severe pain.

Ms. Indomenico is originally from New England and grew up in Connecticut, where she attended the Hartford Conservatory, Hartt School of Music, and St. Joseph College. After working and studying special education, Ms. Indomenico went to England to study music therapy. Throughout her career, she has worked with both children and adults with attention deficit disorder, autism, learning differences, post stroke patients by incorporating music into their school curriculum and individualized treatment plans. Ms. Indomenico has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Russia, Poland and England to speak to professional medical, educational, health and parent organizations about the importance of music as a gateway for growth and change. She believes that music therapy can be the key that unlocks a new world for children with disabilities, and adults with attention deficit disorders or communication disorders due to strokes or traumatic brain injuries. Ms. Indomenico continues to write and lecture on the positive effects of music therapy in education, sensory training, cognitive development and holistic health. For the past five years she has been the music therapy consultant at the SCORE music studio in Sandwich, MA.

In 1992, Ms. Indomenico graduated from Hunter College with a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and Special Education. In New York City she became a Reiki master, after opening up a Reiki clinic for AIDS patients and their families at the Upper Manhattan Task Force on AIDS in Harlem. Ms. Indomenico is a Fellow in the Association of Music and Imagery and is a certified practitioner of the Helen Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. She belongs to the American Music Therapy Association and the Association for Music and Imagery. She is also a supporter of the Special Olympics, Smile Train and the International Association of Special Education, as well as a volunteer with Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod. In the future, Ms. Indomenico intends to continue developing her business, taking on student interns who are studying the creative arts therapies and helping as many people as she can. She attributes her success to her perseverance, love of learning and strong personal ethics.
