SCOTTSDALE, AZ, July 14, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ --Svanhildur Kristjansson, Autism Consultant and Trainer at Arizona Education Cadre, LLC, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in autism communication and consulting.
For over 35 years, Ms. Kristjansson has been involved with autism education and public speaking. She grew up in Iceland with a handicapped brother and was thus, first exposed to the field in her youth. Her father was also the founder of an institution in Iceland for special needs children. Ms. Kristjansson's first job after finishing Teachers University in Iceland was as the principal of a school for physically handicapped students. Some of the students had diagnoses as multi handicapped, when in fact they had autism. Inspired by the children who had trouble communicating, she decided to pursue a career in special education and later as communication specialist.
In Norway, she was educated in speech-language communication and became clinically certified as a speech-language pathologist. Afterward, she worked for school districts in Iceland and for the Children's Psychiatric Clinic as a consultant and a trainer for the staff. She then opened her own clinic in 1984. She also lectured several years at the University of Iceland. Later in life, she moved to the United States and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; she graduated in 1992 with a master's degree in Speech Language Pathology with emphasis on communication issues among students with autism.
Ms. Kristjansson moved to Arizona in 1996 and was soon hired by the Scottsdale Unified School district as an autism consultant. She started teaching the TEACCH Model - Structured Teaching Model for Special Education Teachers. Then she was hired to start a special classroom for students with autism. The first classroom was set up in 1998 and soon there were 12 special classrooms for students with autism in Scottsdale, Arizona.
When the Arizona State Department of Education decided to start statewide training for teachers on autism, she became one of the leaders for that training. Ms. Kristjansson has spent the last four years of her career with Arizona Education Cadre, LLC, where she lectures, consults with the state's school districts, and holds training sessions. Known by her peers as the "Autism Whisperer," she also works hands-on with children in the classroom. Prior to this, she worked for the Arizona Department of Education for five years; she was honored by the state with an award for her autism training.
For 20 years, Ms. Kristjansson belonged to Soroptimist International of Iceland. Today, she is involved with Iceland's Action for Autism. She has also written a book and hopes to have it published in the near future.
