OAI: Minn. Speeders Likely to See Serious Auto Insurance Consequences

A Minnesota law allowing car insurance companies to drop policyholders who have had their licenses suspended for serious infractions means a group of more than 20 speeders in the state may be looking for new policy providers.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, August 16, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nearly two dozen Minnesota motorists who were busted last month for driving more than 100 mph could be in for an unpleasant surprise when it comes time to renew their vehicle coverage.

That's because state law allows insurers to drop policyholders who are caught for excessive speeding or other violations that result in a driver's license suspension, according to OnlineAutoInsurance.com. In other words, getting cited for excessive speeding could make it extremely difficult to maintain coverage or buy auto insurance online or in person.

Authorities cited 72 North Star State motorists for exceeding 90 mph and more than 20 for going faster than 100 mph as part of a statewide crackdown in July.

The scofflaws face hefty fines and other serious consequences.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, speeding citations cost about $120 on average throughout Minnesota, and those who travel more than 20 mph over posted limits face twice that in fines.

Go over the century mark and you could lose your license for six months.

Insurance experts say a person's driving history is key factor in the premiums he or she pays, and having a ticket that led to a license suspension can indicate a motorist's being a higher than average risk.

Under Minnesota statutes, any violation that results in license suspension or revocation--including driving while intoxicated or without a license--results in four points being added to a driver's record.

Points are assigned based on the severity of violations or accidents, and two points are enough of a reason for nonrenewal of an individual motorist's policy.

Steep fines and difficulty in finding insurance are far from the only risks posed by driving too fast, safety officials point out.

Speeding was a factor in nearly 90 deaths on Minnesota roads last year, according to DPS, and was involved in more than 800 severe injuries statewide from 2008 to 2010.
