NEW YORK, NY, November 8, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Daniel Soffer, MD, Associate Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at Lenox Hill Hospital, has been named a Professional of the Year by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in complex coronary, carotid and limb salvage procedures. Dr. Soffer is board-certified in cardiology and interventional cardiology and is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
Dr. Soffer's interest in cardiology was apparent when he earned an MD in 1993 from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. After completing an internship and residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, he took the opportunity to become an interventional fellow at the world-renowned William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. During his two years of training, he gained tremendous experience in coronary, peripheral and structural heart interventions. He also participated in the first procedure involving the TandemHeart, a heart-assist device that is accessible through a patient's skin. Between 2002 and 2004, Dr. Soffer assembled a team of vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists to create a successful carotid stent program in North Carolina. During this time, he was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to use a new atherectomy device to help patients with severely obstructed blood flow in their lower limbs.
In 2004, Dr. Soffer returned to Lenox Hill Hospital to join his longtime mentor, Dr. Gary Roubin, and his interventional team. Now the associate director of the interventional cardiology fellowship program at Lenox Hill, Dr. Soffer is a member of the coronary, peripheral and structural heart teams at Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular institute and is responsible for the treatment of patients who have cardiovascular and peripheral vascular disease. He retains expert-level proficiency in high-risk coronary interventions, carotid stenting, and limb salvage procedures. In addition, he harbors a distinct interest in reno-vascular disease and refractory hypertension, in particular renal artery stenosis, and performs percutaneous interventions to treat refractory high blood pressure due to narrowing of the renal artery.
Furthermore, Dr. Soffer has been a co-investigator in numerous clinical trials to assess new techniques and devices for the treatment of circulation problems and heart disease. He has thoroughly cultivated his expertise in percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale in patients with cryptogenic stroke, atrial septal defect closure, and percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty of the aortic and mitral valves.
Dr. Soffer has been recognized throughout his career for his accomplishments. He was a two-time recipient of the Swiss Foundation Scholarship in the early 1990s and was named one of America's top physicians by Consumers' Research Council of America. In addition, he was selected as an honorary student in cardiology and emergency medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a visiting honorary student in cardiothoracic surgery at Üelleval Hospital in Oslo, Norway. With the aspiration of growing professionally in the future, Dr. Soffer intends to continue his affiliations with the American College of Cardiology and The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.
