STATEN ISLAND, NY, November 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Sarah Vaiselbuh, Medical Director of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and HistioCare Program at Nalitt Cancer Institute of Staten Island University Hospital (Staten Island, NY), has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in cancer treatment and research.

Dr. Vaiselbuh dreamed about becoming a doctor from the time she was 5 years old. Through patience and persistence, she has not only achieved her goal but inspired many other people, both patients and students. She serves as the medical director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and HistioCare Program at Nalitt Cancer Institute of Staten Island University. She specializes in histiocytic disorders, pediatric leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and her research focuses on stem cell niche biology and the tumor microenvironment. At the Nailitt Cancer Institute, Dr. Vaiselbuh performs clinical services, manages the nursing staff, and is engaged in building a basic science laboratory at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. The HistioCare Program focuses on treating children and adolescents with histiocytosis, a rare, cancer-like blood disorder involving the overproduction of a certain kind of white blood cell (histiocytes).

Dr. Vaiselbuh also teaches at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine as Assistant Professor in Pediatrics, where she hopes to prime the generation of future physicians with ethical medical knowledge and professionalism. In addition, she is an assistant investigator at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, where she works on stem cell niche biology and the tumor microenvironment. She says that the intellectual battle of basic science helps her to overcome the emotional toll clinical oncology can take at times. Her patients' clinical presentations help her to design basic research questions, leading to translational medicine, from bed to bench and vice versa.

The highlight of Dr. Vaiselbuh's career occurred during her last year of clinical work in Belgium. Before moving to the United States, she contacted the Make-A-Wish Foundation on behalf of one of her patients, a 2-year-old girl with leukemia, who dreamed of flying in an airplane. A couple months after she left Belgium, Dr. Vaiselbuh learned that the young woman's wish had been granted—when the girl showed up, along with her two brothers and her parents, at Dr. Vaiselbuh's apartment door in New York. The girl had expressly wished to fly with her family to America to see her doctor. Dr. Vaiselbuh was surprised and touched by the little girl's courageous battle against cancer.

After earning an MD in surgery and obstetrics/gynecology from the University of Antwerp - Belgium, Dr. Vaiselbuh completed several residencies and fellowships. Most recently, she completed a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York, preceded by a residency in pediatrics at SUNY Downstate Medical Center - NY. She previously fulfilled a fellowship in adult hematology/oncology and bone marrow transplantation, along with a residency in internal medicine, at Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. Dr. Vaiselbuh also received international training in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands and Australia. She is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric hematology and oncology, and her dedication to her field has earned her numerous research awards, most recently the Jon Pritchard Fellow Award in Histiocytosis. In addition, she holds memberships to the Histiocyte Society, Children's Oncology Group, American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Hematology. She is an active committee member of the American Society for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
