FARMINGTON, CT, December 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thomas DeBerardino, Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Orthopedic Research and Surgery. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.
Dr. DeBerardino was inspired by Army orthopaedic surgeons while he was a cadet at West Point. He received an Army-sponsored health professional scholarship to attend medical school, and in the 14 years since his graduation has become a nationally renowned orthopaedic surgeon. With expertise in reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery, hip arthroscopy and meniscal allograft transplantation, he has worked as an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Connecticut Health Center for the past two years. In addition to being board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holding a sports medicine subspecialty certification, he understands injuries from the athlete's perspective, having played sports while attending West Point. He currently serves as a team physician for many University of Connecticut athletic teams.
Dr. DeBerardino holds an MD from New York Medical College and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He keeps abreast of his field through his memberships in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, Herodicus Society and ACL Study Group. His dedication to improving the lives of others has earned him several prestigious awards, including an NCAA Research Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), an Aircast Award from AOSSM, and a AOSSM-ESSKA European Traveling Fellowship. In a few years, Dr. DeBerardino aspires to become a fellowship director.
