The Gauntlet Runner: A Tale from the French and Indian War, by S. Thomas Bailey, is Now Available Online and in Bookstores

Bailey's historical novel follows the fortunes of one early American family through a fierce territorial war as hostile powers vie for control of coveted land.

UXBRIDGE, ON, January 06, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Gauntlet Runner, the first in a gripping series of books set against the background of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), has just been released and is available for purchase online and in bookstores.

The Gauntlet Runner tells the story of Jacob Murray, a young volunteer from Pennsylvania and a member of Washington's Virginia militia. When the story opens, Jacob, accompanied by his twin brother and two Mingo warriors, is searching for a party of French troops in the Ohio Valley, at that time a dense, barely penetrable wilderness. Meanwhile, in Jacob's absence, a war party of French soldiers and their Huron allies raid his unprotected farm, taking his wife Maggie and their four children captive and forcing them to march through dense wilderness and bug-infested swamps.

The war broke out in 1754 between French and British colonists in a dispute over land in the Ohio River Valley. French settlers from Canada built forts in the valley in an attempt to protect the land from the British. The Huron Indians formed an alliance with the French while the Iroquois fought alongside the British colonists.

The Gauntlet Runner brings to life, in evocative detail, the harsh realities facing the early settlers, as they tried to survive and eke out a living in a land that was often hostile, eventually forming a fledgling nation. The novel tells of hostilities between French and British settlers and of ordinary lives broken apart by war.

Author S. Thomas Bailey has spent years researching North American history during the colonial era and has chosen to depict the period through the genre of historical fiction. He lives with his wife, two children and their dog in a quiet hamlet north of Toronto. The Gauntlet Runner is now available both online at iUniverse and Amazon and in bookstores.
