HIA-LI Hosts Long Island Economic Summit; Confidence, Revenue Get Thumbs Up in 18th Annual Economic Survey and Opinion Poll

    HAUPPAUGE, NY, January 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Confidence in the Long Island economy is up compared to the national economy according to the 18th Annual Economic Survey and Opinion Poll conducted by Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Company, P.C. (AVZ) in partnership with Long Island Business News and the Townsend School of Business at Dowling College. Nearly half of the survey respondents indicated that revenue had increased. A panel of Long Island business leaders will discuss the survey findings as HIA-LI, the recognized voice for business on Long Island, hosts the Long Island Economic Summit, Thursday, January 26, 2012 from 8:00 AM - 10 AM, at the Melville Marriott, Melville, NY. The HIA-LI Long Island Economic Summit panel will be moderated by Thomas J. Murray, Managing Partner, Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Co. (AVZ), P.C. Featured panelists include: Ken Adams, President & CEO, Empire State Development Corp. (ESDC) and Commissioner of Department of Economic Development; Jeremy D. Brown, President, Dowling College; and Kevin O'Connor, CEO, Bridgehampton National Bank.

"Long Island business leaders are smart enough to be cautiously optimistic. At this important annual summit, we look forward to learning more about the regional and national economic outlook as well as availability of credit, predictions on business expansion and relocation, and discussions about the Long Island housing market and job growth," said Terri Alessi-Miceli, president, HIA-LI.

"While our results show continuing concern for our local and national economies, respondents were slightly more optimistic this year about recovery and growth, with 48 percent realizing greater revenue over last year," said Thomas J. Murray, AVZ Managing Partner.

Among the survey highlights, in 2011 respondents indicated:
- Long Island's economic confidence rating improved to 5.1 from 5.0; confidence for the U.S. economy declined to 4.5 from 5.0 in 2010, on a scale of 1-10.
- 21% realized a decline in revenue; down significantly from 37% in 2010.
- 33% project a decline in revenue; 22% project no revenue growth in 2012.
- 45% reduced headcount; 24% project an increase in headcount in 2012.
- 86% do not have any facility expansion plans for 2012.
- 43% of respondents believe real estate prices will drop in 2012.
