Florida's Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival Approaching

The small community of Fellsmere, Fla., is gearing up to throw their biggest party of the year - The Frog Leg Festival.

LONDON, ENGLAND, January 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 21st annual Frog Leg Festival, which will run this year from Jan. 19-21, 2012, is expected to attract more than 85,000 attendees and serve more than 7,000 fried frog legs. More than 80,000 people are expected to attend the annual Frog Leg Festival in Fellsmere, Fla., a community of 5,300 residents who live along the picturesque Treasure Coast, according to Froglegfestival.com.

The menu consists of fried frog legs and gator tails, along with homemade hush puppies and grits. Food vendor booths range from candy apples to spicy sausage and peppers. The full schedule of entertainment includes carnival rides and games, a petting zoo and pony rides as well as more than 100 booths from artists and crafters from several states. Attendees can also participate in the Red Neck Olympics, which includes Pig's Feet Bobbin', or contests for the hottest motorbike, hottest legs and the best jumping frog.

During the past two decades, the exuberant Frog Leg Festival has garnered nearly 75 newspaper articles and hundreds of thousands of dollars to support the Fellsmere Recreation Department, which serves more than 150 local children playing on five baseball, two basketball and four soccer teams. The four-day event even boasts two world records: in 2001, 75,000 people devoured 6,000 pounds of frog legs, half of which were consumed in four hours.

This small community of nearly 5,200 residents has experienced tremendous growth in the last decade with the population increasing by more than 36 per cent. Located on the outskirts of the Sebastian-Vero Beach Metropolitan area along the Atlantic Ocean, in the 1940s the economy of this Treasure Coast town heavily relied upon frog legs, which were shipped to northern restaurants by railroad. Due to over-harvesting and droughts in the marshy swamplands of Florida however, most of the frog legs served at the volunteer-led festival are imported.

There are no direct flight, train or bus routes from Orlando to Fellsmere, so the best way to travel the 63 miles is by rental car. A complimentary shuttle service is provided to the festival from the planned parking areas.
