CORRECTION: Meals to Live Takes Aim at Sodium Levels in Frozen Entrees

First frozen entree created for those living with diabetes offers healthy options for all.

DALLAS, TX, January 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With millions of Americans vowing to lose weight in 2012, reduced calorie frozen foods are a popular diet aid. But low calorie often means high sodium in the frozen food aisle, with some diet frozen entrees containing more than 800 milligrams of sodium. Meals to Live, the first-ever frozen food line designed specifically for those living with diabetes, is among the lowest in sodium, keeping all of its eight entree choices with 480 milligrams or less of sodium.

According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the daily maximum amount of sodium recommended is less than 2,300 milligrams, and less than 1,500 milligrams for people age 51 or older, African-Americans and people living with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Despite those recommendations, Americans on average consume more than 3,400 milligrams each day, with about 75 percent coming from processed and prepared foods.

"Many low calorie frozen entrees rely heavily on salt for flavor, but our chef-created Meals to Live entrees get much of their great taste from herbs and spices," said Meals to Live Founder and CEO Cole Egger. "All Meals to Live entrees have no more than 350 calories, 6 grams of fat and 480 milligrams of sodium and provide an ideal quick meal option for people living with diabetes or anyone wanting a convenient, healthy meal."

Meals to Live is one of the first frozen food companies to clearly display nutritional information such as calories, sodium, carbs and fiber on the front of its packaging, making it easy for consumers to choose a healthy meal option. For each entree Meals to Live provides the Carb Choice points number, a management tool developed by the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet.

"People need to look beyond just calories in choosing a frozen entree and watch for other key nutritional elements like sodium," said Registered Dietitian Jennifer Neily. "Meals to Live entrees are an excellent healthier option for anyone looking for a diet-friendly meal on the go."

Meals to Live frozen entrees, such as Chicken Fajita, Turkey Meatballs, Shrimp Jambalaya and Spinach Omelet, have a suggested retail price of $3.99 to $4.99 and are available in select grocers nationwide including Publix, Tom Thumb/Randalls, Raley's, Brookshire's, Ralphs, Meijer and Sprouts and are also available online at www.mealstolive.com.
