LAHINA, HAWAII, February 15, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nars Fernandez, Director of Music and Liturgy of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in music.

As the director of music and liturgy of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, Ms. Fernandez serves as the chairperson of the liturgical committee. She is responsible for leading the congregation at all masses with the music and singing, preparing the material for church services, and playing piano and guitar.

She oversees three different choirs for the church, prepares the order of worship, and recruits choir members. Ms. Fernandez was born in the southern part of the Philippines, in Davao City. She came to Hawaii in 2001 and served as director of music at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Honokaa. In 2002, she came to Maui and was received at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church by Father Bill Petrie to coordinate the R.E. and the RCIA programs. In 2003, when Father William J. Kunisch II became the new administrator at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, he assigned her as the director of music and liturgy, the position she holds today. Ms. Fernandez wants people to participate actively in church celebrations through community singing. She had published four books of her compositions entitled 'HUNI SA KINABUHI,' or MELODY OF LIFE in Cebuano Visayan dialect.

Ms. Fernandez earned a master's degree in church music and liturgy with a concentration in composition from Saint Joseph's College in 1979, having received a Bachelor of Music in piano, which she earned in the Philippines in 1969. In 2005, she was named a Pioneer of Philippine Liturgical Music at the School of Theology in Manila, Philippines. In years to come, Ms. Fernandez hopes to retire and publish another book of her compositions.
