Brown Trucking Company to Provide Sustainability Training to their Drivers

"When asking professional truck drivers to practice fuel reduction activities, the cost to our environment is a much stronger motivation than the cost to our bottom line," -- Brian Kinsey

LITHONIA, GA, February 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Brown Trucking Company announced today that it will provide environmental sustainability and carbon emission reduction training to each of their 1,000 drivers.

"As an industry, we have done a poor job educating our drivers on environmental sustainability and carbon emissions," explained Brown Trucking Company CEO Brian Kinsey. "That doesn't make much sense when you consider that no other employee group in the world has more ability to reduce carbon emissions than do professional truck drivers."

"Every year trucking companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars purchasing fuel efficient equipment and technology yet invest virtually nothing in employee sustainability training. While many trucking companies do encourage and preach fuel-conserving activities to their drivers, the accompanying motivation is usually the high price of fuel. When asking professional truck drivers to practice fuel reduction activities, the cost to our environment is a much stronger motivation than the cost to our bottom line."

Brown Trucking Company enlisted the services of GreenWay Miles to provide their driver sustainability training. "Our driver sustainability training program is an 14-minute video that has two main components," explained Joe White, CEO of GreenWay Miles. "The first provides truck drivers a general education on global warming, greenhouse gases and the impact carbon dioxide emissions is having on our planet. The second component explains to drivers the activities they can practice daily to reduce carbon emissions while operating their trucks."

"Our training program explains carbon emission reduction opportunities in terms that are relevant to employees of the trucking industry and easy to understand," explained Joe. "For example, eliminate a mile of driving and you eliminate a mass of carbon dioxide emissions that would completely fill a 150 gallon fuel tank. Eliminate an hour of idling and you eliminate an amount of carbon dioxide emissions that would completely fill a standard sized day cab."

"Brown Trucking Company recently became a GreenWay Miles Certified Carrier by having a full carbon audit performed on both our fleet and facilities," said Brian Kinsey. "Now that we have accurate baselines of our total carbon footprint, we are moving to the next level - we're going to provide our employees with the education, motivation and resources needed to reduce those emissions."

Brian plans to administer sustainability training to all new drivers during orientation classes and to existing drivers during safety meetings. "We want all of our drivers to understand that they have an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions each and every time they get behind the wheel," explained Brian.
