Will Your Company's Network be Overloaded When Staff Watch the Olympics?

With the London Olympics just six months away, companies in the UK are being warned about a potentially serious 'melt down' in their Internet connections.

LONDON, ENGLAND, March 25, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With the London Olympics just six months away, companies in the UK are being warned about a potentially serious 'melt down' in their Internet connections. The government has even suggested that bosses allow their staff to work from home during the Olympic Games period which last from 27th July right through to 12th August. But in truth this action could cause even more trouble when it comes to the Internet being overloaded. So what is the solution to this inevitable problem that faces companies in the UK?

It is pretty clear that everyone has to expect slower connections during this time and everyone has to be prepared to lose mobile phone signals too during the peak period of the Games. Low-data traffic which includes voice and email should not be affected too much, but anything which involves large download content will unavoidably suffer.

Businesses need to be prepared to lose Internet connections during the London Olympics and although data caps may be introduced to cover the peak times in an effort to prevent total overload, companies who rely heavily on the Internet will be affected. As a great majority of businesses these days rely on the Internet to get critical data downloaded on a daily basis, they need to get themselves organised in the most positive manner possible and contact IT Support Companies to get all the advice they need.

There are however, several ways that businesses might be able to protect the most critical applications during the London Games. Workers are bound to want to stream video from their favourite events that occur during the Olympics, and this may have to be accepted as something that is going to happen. Companies need to know just what their network traffic load actually is and to identify performance triggers. They are able to do this by employing the services of Ipanema or Visual Networks which install intelligence traffic devices; these will prevent non-critical traffic from interfering with the critical traffic in their networks.

Another valuable factor to consider is using a WAN Accelerator as this will minimise the amount of traffic on the network by split streaming. This allows multiple videos to be seen as one single stream across a WAN link. One other consideration that companies may like to take on board is to use an MPLS circuit to direct their critical traffic.

Any business who is worried about the affects the London Olympics will have on their Internet connections and performances should get in touch with an IT Support Service to find out as much information as possible about ways in which they could avoid the 'melt down' that's predicted.

If a company already has a contract, then the IT Support Service department will be able to advise them on the best way forward when it comes to protecting their critical traffic during the fourteen day period of the games, and in particular during the peak times of the games when everyone will want to watch them.

No company will be able to avoid the dilemma and therefore needs to get ready for the event well in advance of it happening. Data caps might be introduced, but this has not been finalised as being certain yet, so a lot of IT support will be needed to keep data flowing as smoothly as possible during this time. There are ways of doing this; they just need setting in place, ready to be used when needed.
