Plastic Surgeon Shares Insights on Treating Depression with BOTOX

Dr. Anna Petropoulos, a Boston area BOTOX Cosmetic specialist, weighs in on a recent study that analyzed the effects of treatment with botulinum toxin on a person's mood and overall feelings.

DANVERS, MA, April 25, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Anna Petropoulos of The New England Facial & Cosmetic Surgery Center says changes she has seen in her Boston area BOTOX Cosmetic patients support the findings of a study recently published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.

The study found a positive correlation between the use of botulinum toxin to treat the glabellar region of the face and a temporary reduction in depression.

Dr. Petropoulos says she sees similar results in some of her patients who receive treatment with BOTOX in the Boston area.

"BOTOX, which was the first FDA-approved medication to treat glabellar lines, has a number of benefits aside from smoothing skin along the forehead," Dr. Petropoulos says. "Patients who have BOTOX treatments 2 or 3 times a year often find that they feel more confident and happy with their appearance. This makes them feel better about themselves and thus happier with life in general. Simply put, when you look good, you feel good.

"Since patients aren't able to frown fully, the brain is unable to complete the anger response neural pathway and thus thinks that it is neutral or happy. People often say they feel much happier and even find improvement with their migraines just with simple Botox treatments for wrinkles."

Dr. Petropoulos offers a wide range of injectable treatments for facial rejuvenation. In addition to BOTOX, she provides injectable fillers such as JUVEDERM, RADIESSE and Sculptra Aesthetic. Injectable fillers restore volume to help smooth wrinkles, facial folds and fine lines.

"We help women and men of all ages have a more youthful facial appearance," Dr. Petropoulos says. "A customized treatment plan, which takes into account a person's condition and cosmetic goals, is important to achieving natural-looking, individualized results."

Dr. Petropoulos says many people turn to injectable treatments to postpone surgical procedures such as a facelift. Boston area patients will often choose BOTOX and injectable fillers to address multiple areas of the face at once.

"Injectable treatments can postpone surgery, but some patients will also use them to enhance the results of a facelift," Dr. Petropoulos says. "Regardless of the intended goal, patients are discovering how treatments such as BOTOX can enhance their natural appearances and help them feel happier in general."

Dr. Anna Petropoulos is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Dr. Petropoulos earned her medical degree from the School of Medicine at J.W. Goethe University in Frankfurt, West Germany. She also earned a diploma in Aerospace Studies from the International Space University at M.I.T. in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Petropoulos is certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has extensive training in injectable fillers and is one of the few surgeons in the country to be named a National Education Faculty member for Artistry in the Use of BOTOX Cosmetic treatments and for facial volume restoration using three popular facial fillers: JUVEDERM XC, RADIESSE and Sculptra.
