BELLEVUE, WA, May 14, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Roy Page, Professor Emeritus of Periodontics and Pathology at the University of Washington and Chief Executive Officer of Orbatec, LLC, has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Medical Research. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.

Dr. Page has made numerous contributions to the field throughout his 40 years in biomedical research, demonstrating intellectual leadership, a spirit of collaboration, and a record of professional service. Since 2003, Dr. Page has been a professor emeritus of periodontics and pathology at the University of Washington, with which he has enjoyed a long and distinguished association. After earning a Certificate in Peridontology in 1963 and a Ph.D. in experimental pathology in 1967, Dr. Page served the university as a professor of pathology and periodontics in the schools of medicine and dentistry, director and associate dean for research in the School of Dentistry, director of the Research Center in Oral Biology, director of graduate and postdoctoral education, and director of the Regional Clinical Dental Research Center. The School of Dentistry recognized him as a distinguished alumnus in 2000.

While teaching and conducting research at the University of Washington, Dr. Page was the preceptor for many postdoctoral fellows and students in the Ph.D. and master's degree programs. He also maintained a part-time periodontal practice, served as a visiting professor in Sweden, Finland, and South Africa, published journal articles, monographs, and textbooks, participated in editorial review boards, organized meetings and symposia, and held leadership positions in national and international associations. In 1983, Dr. Page received an honorary Doctor of Science from Loyola University of Chicago, which recognized his research for leading to significant advances in the understanding and treatment of periodontal diseases. Known for his multidisciplinary approach to scientific research, Dr. Page has studied connective tissue biochemistry, chronic inflammation and the immune system's response to disease. In addition, he has worked on the development of a vaccine for human periodontitis and technology to assess people's risk of periodontal disease.

Dr. Page was the president of the American Association for Dental Research from 1982 to 1983, and also held various other leadership positions within the organization. He was president of the International Association for Dental Research from 1987 to 1988. He continues to be an active member of a variety of professional associations, including the American Academy of Periodontology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Dental Association, American Society of Experimental Pathology, American Society for Microbiology, AADR and IADR. In addition, Dr. Page participates in a working group for the Centers for Disease Control, surveying periodontal disease in the U.S. population at the county level. He also serves as a scientific consultant and spokesperson for the American Dental Association.

Dr. Page has received several awards from the American Academy of Periodontology, including the prestigious William J. Gies Award in 1982, a Fellowship Award in 1989, a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in 1998, and a Distinguished Scientist Award in 2011. He has received a cornucopia of additional awards, ranging from a Gold Medal Award from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1957 through the Norton M. Ross Award for Clinical Research presented by the American Dental Association in 1998 to the Callahan Memorial Award from the Ohio Dental Association in 2008. Moreover, Dr. Page has been elected as a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and Pierre Fauchard Academy, and as an honorary member of British, Indian, and French periodontal societies.

Dr. Page began his professional journey by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Berea College in 1953 and a D.D.S., summa cum laude, from the University of Maryland Dental School four years later. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy between 1957 and 1960, and a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1964 until 1978. He attributes his success to hard work and intelligent and productive colleagues. The most gratifying aspects of his career, he says, have been playing a crucial role in research that progressed the knowledge of the causes and clinical management of periodontal disease, and being well known for his numerous philanthropic engagements.

For the past five years, Dr. Page has lent his expertise to Orbatec, LLC, a small startup company that is working to bring to market two protein drugs that promote the healing of bone fractures and complex wounds. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, gardening, maintaining his greenhouse, traveling with his wife, reading and attending the opera.
