George L. Bakris, MD, focuses on the diagnosis and reduction of high blood pressure and the treatment of kidney disease

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, May 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- George L. Bakris, MD, Director of the ASH Comprehensive Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago and Professor of Medicine, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in health care.

Dr. Bakris was distinguished as Professional of the Year in Health Care by Worldwide Who's Who in 2012, and attributes his success to being well-trained, becoming a part of many national guideline committees, and participating as a key member on clinical trials that have changed practice patterns. He became involved in health care because he always had an early interest in science and enjoyed the application of it, so he decided to practice medicine. Highlights of Dr. Bakris's career include receiving an honorary doctorate in medicine from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and becoming the president of the American Society of Hypertension.

With his seven years of experience as a Professor of Medicine and Director of the ASH Comprehensive Hypertension Center his areas of expertise include kidney disease and resistant hypertension, kidney disease in correlation to diabetes, vascular disease, and conducting clinical research on diabetes. Dr. Bakris is an expert at using a technique that gives physicians a more accurate reading of a patient's blood pressure, known as Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM). Dr. Bakris also has 22 years of experience as a physician in academic medicine directing a hypertension fellowship program, seeing patients and designing clinical trials. This supplies him with other skills, and includes carrying out administrative duties, and teaching. In the future, Dr. Bakris hopes to become involved in public education and public policy regarding guideline implementation.

Dr. Bakris obtained an MD from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, where he also completed a research fellowship in physiology and biophysics. Dr. Bakris also has a certification in Internal Medicine and a certification in Hypertension Nephrology. He is President of the American Society of Hypertension, a fellow of the American Heart Association and the American College of Physicians, a board member of the American Society of Nephrology, and a member of the National Kidney Foundation.
