Miles from Home, Colleen Lanier's Award-Winning Debut Book Presents Alzheimer's, Dementia, Hospice and End of Life Issues in an Honest, Humorous and Unflinching Manner

A heartfelt true story of life, death, friendship, the power of love and the choices we make.

WINSTON SALEM, NC, June 01, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Colleen Lanier is proud to announce that her first book, Miles from Home: A true story of the choices that define us, was recently selected as a Finalist in the Non-Fiction category of The National Indie Excellence Book Awards.

Miles from Home tells the true story of a cross country journey taken by Lanier and her best friend Sean. Sean, who also happens to be her very recent ex-boyfriend, has asked for help in moving his parents into an assisted living facility near his home in Washington State. Their journey is complicated by his mother's memory loss, progressing stages of Alzheimer's disease and middle of the night wandering. Sean's father experiences a precipitous decline due to terminal lung cancer, and an end of life drama ensues.

Lanier and Sean struggle to get to Washington with both parents alive, and Sean must make critical decisions regarding death and dying, assisted living options, nursing homes, hospice, memory care and becoming a guardian to his mother with Alzheimer's. Throughout this story, Sean and Lanier's thirty year friendship is tested, pressured, and redefined. An uncommon love story emerges from the pages of Miles from Home, reminding us that love really does conquer all.
