Understanding Rhinoplasty

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 28, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rhinoplasty is a unique plastic surgery procedure that is used to re-shape a patient's nose in order to make it more proportional with the face. Many people are unhappy with the size and shape of the nose they were born with, as it does not compliment their natural facial features. Others have been left with a misshapen or crooked nose thanks to a traumatic blow during a sporting event, or some other type of accident.

Techniques Used in Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be used to correct a number of issues with your nose, but most people are concerned with one specific aspect of their nose - usually an unsightly bump or the overall size. Depending on your needs, your rhinoplasty surgeon will choose to perform either a closed rhinoplasty or an open rhinoplasty.

A closed rhinoplasty procedure uses small incisions inside of the nose, while an open procedure includes additional incisions in the skin that separates your nostrils. If you need only minor surgical alterations, closed rhinoplasty is the ideal approach. It is especially ideal because it eliminates all visible scarring.

However, if your needs dictate open rhinoplasty, you can still minimize the amount of visible scarring by trusting your procedure to a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. After you are fully healed and recovered, your scarring should be hardly noticeable.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty

After your rhinoplasty procedure, your surgeon may insert splints to help your nose keep its new shape and prevent airway obstruction. These items should be kept in place until your plastic surgeon removes them. Generally, they do not need to remain for more than a week, but some bandages may have to be kept in place for up to ten days.

Some amount of swelling will be noticeable for the first few weeks. This is a common side effect, and it should be temporary. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with medications to help minimize your discomfort. He also give you instructions on how to reduce your swelling and avoid other common side effects.

Once your swelling has gone down, the results of your rhinoplasty procedure should be apparent. It may take months before your nose completely settles into its final shape, but most patients report that the results of rhinoplasty are well worth this waiting period. As long as you do not injure it, your nose should keep its new shape for a lifetime, providing you with the flattering, symmetrical look you wanted.
