While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.
Mr. Shiel has 25 years experience as the Managing Director of Airtronic Circuits Pty Ltd., which provides company specific training and expert consulting in all areas of electronic design & manufacture as well as actual design services and low volume manufacture, including SMT. With 50 years experience in electronic engineering, Mr. Shiel's areas of expertise include manufacturing technology and circuit board design. He lectures at La Trobe University where he teaches a course on Design to Mass Production in the Masters of Electronic Engineering, undertakes the day-to-day operations of his small business and acts as a technical consultant for Specialised Conductives Pty Ltd, importers of components for the reduction of EMI. While working for the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the Australian Electronics Development Centre (AEDC) he developed courses in High Reliability PCB Repair Techniques, Manufacture and Design for SMT, Components and Assembly Techniques of Today and Tomorrow, Electronic Manufacturing and Statistical Process Control, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Prevention, Electromagnetic Radiation Safety (Radhaz), Electromagnetic Compatibility, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Tools for Predictive Engineering, The A - Z of Printed Circuit Boards and Total Quality Management. As Head of Department, he also was in charge of and contributed to the development of the Certificate of Technology in Audiovisual Technology at RMIT.
Mr. Shiel has written works that have appeared in various industry publications. He wrote "White Paper on Training in the Automotive Industry" in November 1979, "Manufacturing - how do we fare? - Australian Electronics Engineering" in August 1992, and "A Look at World Best Practice - National Business Bulletin" in September 1993. He also published "Weighing Cost against Quality - Asian Sources Electronic Engineer" in October 1998, and both "The Fundamentals of Solid State Technology - Society of Automotive Engineers Seminar" and "The State of the Art in Automotive Electronics - Bus Proprietors Conference - Reving into the 80s" in 1980. He has also delivered papers at various conferences, including 'How much should Industry spend on Training?' at the SMCBA Conference in 1989, 'Where does Manufacturing really start?' at Nepcon West in 1998, 'Environmental Issues In Electronics Assembly' at the SMCBA Conference in 2000 (presented on behalf of the Surface Mount Council USA), and 'The OHS Aspects of Electromagnetic Radiation' at the Safety in Action Conference in 2001.
Mr. Shiel received an Associate Diploma (1969) and a Fellowship Diploma (1976) in Electronic Engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Diploma of Education from the State College of Victoria in 1974. He is a Member of the Institute of Engineers Australia and a former Senior Member of the IREE. He is a founding member and former President of the Surface Mount and Circuit Board Association in Australia (SMCBA). He attributes his success to having a gifted talent for electronics, and to the numerous opportunities presented to him in manufacturing from his time as the Principal Lecturer in Manufacturing Technology with the Australian Electronics Development Centre. Looking ahead, Mr. Shiel hopes to keep operating in his current capacity and keep abreast of industry innovations.
