Questions About Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that can be placed over the front of your teeth to correct a number of common cosmetic dental problems

BOSTON, MA, August 01, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that can be placed over the front of your teeth to correct a number of common cosmetic dental problems. Most commonly, porcelain veneers are used to correct issues such as teeth that are gapped, crooked, chipped, cracked, irregularly or unevenly sized, or stained below the enamel by medications or mineralization.

Do porcelain veneers offer functional benefits?

Porcelain veneers are largely considered a cosmetic dentistry solution but this does not mean they are without their functional benefits. Sometimes called instant orthodontics, porcelain veneers can improve the alignment of your bite. They can also strengthen teeth that have been weakened by chips and cracks, helping prevent future stress.

How are porcelain veneers placed?

Porcelain veneers take two or more visits to your cosmetic dentist. During your first visit, your dentist will prepare your teeth for veneers by removing a small amount of your natural tooth enamel. Once enamel has been removed, your dentist will make a mold of your teeth to be sent to a dental lab for creation of your customized veneers. You will then be fitted with temporary veneers to be worn until your personalized veneers have been created.

Once your veneers have been colored, shaped, and sized to meet the exact needs of your smile, you will return to your dentist for placement. Your cosmetic dentist will adjust your veneers to ensure a pleasing look and feel before permanently adhering them to your smile.

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

Porcelain veneers can be long-lasting, but are not permanent. If cared for properly, porcelain veneers can last in excess of ten years, but they will eventually need to be replaced. It is a good idea to work with a cosmetic dentist who can also perform your general dental services. This will allow your dentist to check your veneers during your biannual examinations and determine when they will need to be replaced.
