The magazine, which was established in 1981 was for a number of years owned and operated by Yohan, Japan's largest distributor of English publications. The magazine was later sold by Yohan in a multimillion dollar venture and for the past 15+ years was owned and operated by Tokyo-based translation and publishing company Nexxus Communications. Nexxus Communicatons' sale of the Tokyo Journal and the due diligence process was interrupted by the March 11, 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. An agreement was finally concluded and the current publisher, Tokyo Journal International, Inc. began accepting subscriptions again in 2012 with its first post-Tohoku Earthquake issue being December 2012 Issue #270.

For over 3 decades, the Tokyo Journal has provided a glimpse into Japanese culture, Japan and Asia, often through the eyes of those who have travelled and lived there. The Tokyo Journal continues this tradition while at the same time expanding the variety of topics to satisfy the diverse interests of the magazine's affluential and jet-setting international readership.
