FAIRFAX, VA, September 26, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Steve Derr, newly appointed Chief Technology Officer for Avaya Government Solutions, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in information technology management for the federal government sector.

Beginning his career in the U.S. Air Force as a weapons control specialist and satellite communications technician, Mr. Derr quickly developed the skills necessary to earn him upper management positions with White House Communications Agency, Nortel Government Solutions and most recently, Avaya Government Solutions. Over the course of his career, he has amassed more than 25 years of professional experience working in all aspects of federal sector communications business development and on projects with the U.S. Department of Defense and other intelligence and civilian agencies.

With a deep understanding of federal sector sales engineering and sales operations, Mr. Derr worked for the past two years to dramatically increase sales and grow revenues in his area of responsibility to $350M as Avaya's executive vice president of sales and systems engineering. Recognized for his outstanding efforts, Mr. Derr was recently promoted to his current leadership role of CTO for the company. Utilizing his expertise in unified communications, data networking and cloud technology, he leads a Chief Technology Office team of 20 employees and is responsible for driving large, strategic opportunities in the government sector. In addition, Mr. Derr directs the application of the company's research and development resources focused on government requirements while collaborating with senior management and technical stakeholders.

A dynamic problem solver, Mr. Derr attributes his years of success to his willingness to take on new challenges and his ability to handle them effectively by breaking them down into manageable, actionable and tactical steps. He prides himself on being able to develop solutions that work for the customer, which helps him to build significant loyalty and acquire repeat business. In the future, Mr. Derr intends to continue developing new business and leading cohesive teams who are as committed as he is to the corporate mission of delivering complex, high-profile projects both on time and on budget.

Mr. Derr's educational background includes a master's degree in information technology management from Colorado Technical University and a bachelor's degree in information technology from Strayer University. He also earned graduate level certificates in program management, networking & telecommunications, systems analysis and integration, and data base management. He has been a member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) since 2002. Mr. Derr has been the recipient of an award from the White House Communications Agency, and from 2001-2009, he was honored by Nortel with the International Circle of Excellence Sales Award.
