BRANDON, MANITOBA, CANADA, February 18, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. William H.N. Paton, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., Professor and Chair of the Biology Department of Brandon University, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in biology.
One of the universities in Manitoba, Brandon University offers programs in science, education, health, music and graduate studies. As head of the biology department, Dr. Paton handles the budget, researches and develops scientific projects in addition to teaching.
Dr. Paton has 36 years of experience in the field of biology, with three years of experience as professor and chair of the biology department at Brandon University. His areas of expertise include the history of research in biomass energy, plant science and environmental biology. Before working in academia, Dr. Paton pursued a career in dentistry, winning a Distinction in Chemistry at Glasgow University. He switched from dentistry to explore the field of applied microbiology at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland. He become involved in his current profession as his interest in the biological sciences grew.
Passionate about science and research, Dr. Paton attributes his success to his education, experience and mentors. His work has garnered him several awards, Biology Prize in his undergraduate program, including provincial and national scholarships for graduate work, a Canadian Biomass Energy Institute Award and an Association of Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba Award which also led to an Innovation Award from the Manitoba government. His extensive community service contributions led to the Community Service Award from the Brandon University Board of Governors In addition to his role at Brandon University, Dr. Paton served as president of The Manitoba Organization of Faculty Associations, and is a member of Plant Science Canada. He is 1st Vice-president of the Canadian Socciety of Environmental Biologists and a member of the Board of the Manitoba Hazardous Waste Treatment Corporation.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, Dr. Paton pursued a Master of Science from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He later earned a Ph.D., also from Queen's University. In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Paton enjoys playing tennis, singing and walking. In the years to come, he plans to open a state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory that he hopes will have a positive impact worldwide.
