History Associates Helps Gettysburg College Commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War

In honor of the 150th anniversaries of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address, History Associates completed a smartphone app, a film, and a series of wayfinding signs for Gettysburg College.

ROCKVILLE, MD, June 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- History Associates, the leading U.S. historical research firm, completed a smartphone app, a film, and a series of wayfinding signs for Gettysburg College in support of its commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. The film and app were recently highlighted as part of Gettysburg's 150th anniversary events in The New York Times travel section.

Gettysburg will be hosting an influx of tourists this year for the 150th anniversaries of the Battle of Gettysburg (June 29-July 7) and the Gettysburg Address (November 19). This heightened interest presented the College with a unique opportunity to showcase its role during the battle and its scholarship. "With the film, the newly installed interpretive signs, and the smartphone app we are ready for the many visitors expected this summer," noted Patricia Lawson, Associate Vice President of Government and Community Relations at Gettysburg College. "Thanks to History Associates for working with Gettysburg College in producing such fine projects for the Sesquicentennial. We are pleased."

Working in close collaboration with the College, History Associates conducted the historical research, located and licensed images, and directed the production of the app, the film, and the signs.

The smartphone app, created with developer NeoTreks, Inc., is a guided tour that takes visitors through the campus and the town to witness the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of students, faculty, and townspeople during the summer of 1863. The app also explores how the College continues to shape the memory of these historic events. The app, "Gettysburg College: Witness to History," is now available free of charge in the Apple iTunes store and on Google Play.

Addressing Gettysburg is a 15-minute film that artfully explores the enduring meaning of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and how the College continues to honor and interpret this moment in history. History Associates oversaw creation of the film, which was produced by Northern Light Productions. It debuted on Alumni Weekend, June 1, when it was introduced by History Associates president and Gettysburg College alumnus Brian Martin. The film is free and open to the public, running at the Majestic Theater throughout the summer. It can also be viewed on the Gettysburg College website.

History Associates also worked with the College to develop six interpretive signs that highlight key historical locations around the campus. These signs reinforce Gettysburg College's rich history and its direct involvement in the Civil War. They were developed in collaboration with Woodworth Associates, and were designed to provide a lasting interpretation of the College that will remain relevant long after the sesquicentennial celebrations have ended.
