Save the date! The Carlsbad Department of Development's second annual National Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summit is scheduled for Oct. 14-17 in Carlsbad, NM.

CARLSBAD, NM, July 30, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Save the date! The Carlsbad Department of Development's second annual National Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summit is scheduled for Oct. 14-17 in Carlsbad, NM.

"The focus of this year's summit is going to be how policy can be balanced with science," said John Waters, CDOD executive director. "This conference will be especially helpful to elected state and federal legislators and their staff from across the country."

The previous summit, which attracted people from across the world, took place during April of 2012 and included a wide variety of experts to discuss the possible closure of the nuclear fuel cycle. New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez helped deliver the summit's welcome.

Again this year, the summit will focus heavily on the fuel cycle and will highlight the success story of the Waste isolation Pilot Plant (or WIPP). In addition to tours of the WIPP facility, speakers and panelists will cover topics ranging from a brief history of the industry and how it has evolved to its current state to what the future holds in regards to waste storage and specifically WIPP.

"This national summit will provide state and federal legislators and others from across the nation with a comprehensive look at the history of the nuclear industry from weapons production to commercial nuclear power," noted Waters. Topics include the evolution of policies, lessons learned, viewpoints from regulators, the Department of Energy, and industry leaders, and, most importantly, the nation's path forward.

"For those struggling for answers on how to balance politics and science in dealing with nuclear issues, this is a conference you do not want to miss," added CDOD President Dave Sepich.
