    QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, November 1, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lauren Therese Williams, Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics for Griffith University, was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Who's Who. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.

Professor Lauren Williams is an educator, author and a health professional. Her current role is Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the world ranked Griffith University, having formerly held the same role at the University of Canberra. She is a leading member of the dietetic profession, with research interests in the social aspects of food and the education of health professionals. Professor Williams is an active researcher and Ph.D. supervisor in the areas of obesity and weight gain prevention and in best practice delivery of Dietetic interventions. She has published books, book chapters and journal articles in these areas, including the international reader and text "A Sociology of Food and Nutrition: The Social Appetite." Professor Williams has contributed evidence-based reviews for the National Health and Medical Research Council's revision of the "Dietary Guidelines for Australians" and the review of "Best Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity in Adults" by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).

Professor Williams has 27 years of professional experience as a dietitian, with 22 years as an academic in the university sector. Over the years, she has established herself as an expert in nutrition and dietetics, particularly weight management. In the course of her university duties, she is responsible for teaching research methods, managing research projects, supervising Ph.D. students, and maintaining her clinical practice. Prior to joining Griffith University, she was a professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Canberra, and prior to that worked at the University of Newcastle, where she helped to establish and lead the first undergraduate degree program to educate dietitians in Australia.

Looking back, Professor Williams attributes her success to her passion and perseverance. She became a professional academic through her desire for lifelong learning and education. Once she started learning about nutrition and dietetics as part of her science degree, she knew she was hooked. Career highlights include being elected Vice President of the Dietitians Association of Australia, a nationally implemented publication to improve nutrition in child care centres, and publishing an internationally used text with Oxford University Press.

Professor Williams received a Ph.D. in public health nutrition from The University of Newcastle, a graduate diploma in dietetics from Deakin University, a postgraduate diploma in health promotion from Curtin University, a graduate diploma in social science from The University of New England, and a Bachelor of Science in public health nutrition from The University of New England, with Honors (Class I). In addition to her degrees and diplomas, she is an Advanced Accredited Practicing Dietitian (AAPD) and an Advanced Accredited Nutritionist. She is a member of the Public Health Association of Australia, the Australia New Zealand Obesity Society, the Dietitians Association of Australia, and the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition. Among her many awards and accolades are a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2011, and a Vice Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning from the University of Newcastle in 2010. In years to come, Professor Williams intends to continue to grow her research output through work on larger research projects.
