Automotive Machine Shop APM Heavy Duty Offers Magnaflux Testing

APM Heavy Duty offers Magnaflux testing services, which are essential for identifying surface cracks that are invisible to the naked eye.

ATLANTA, GA, January 13, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Deutz engine components dealer, APM Heavy Duty, would like to remind customers that one of the top services they offer is Magnaflux testing.

During the manufacturing process, a lot of metal parts develop various surface cracks and fissures that can cause premature wear and tear and possible equipment malfunction if not corrected. For many years, Magnaflux testing has been used effectively to detect these flaws, allowing manufacturers and equipment dealers to maintain consistent quality control standards.

What Is Magnaflux?

Also known as a magnetic dye test, Magnaflux is a leading type of nondestructive testing that has long delivered excellent results. The test itself is fairly straightforward, but it provides precision accuracy in the way of discovering surface defects. It is used on a wide array of metal parts, but only those that can be magnetized.

The process entails applying a thin coat of magnetic particle dye over the entire part. Once completed, a handheld magnet is slowly moved across the surface. Any fissures will be quickly identified by assessing how the particles in the dye react.

When a crack is present, the particle will move inside the gap and subsequently form a straight line, thus indicating exactly where the defect lies. Since it is difficult to see the changes in the particle formation, most shops, like the one operated by John Deere parts dealer APM Heavy Duty, use black lights in a darkened room. The dye is fluorescent and thus easily illuminated.

Accoriding to David DeBuc, Vice President of APM Engine Parts, "Magnaflux testing is recommended for almost all machine parts. The imperfections it detects may be small in size, but they can cause large-scale damage if not repaired."
