These industry accolades all stem from the Mazda3's complete redesign in its third generation, featuring the full suite of Mazda's SKYACTIV technologies. These design and engineering tweaks not only look great, they increase the car's fuel economy, with an EPA-estimated 39 mpg highway for the sedan(4). The 2014 Mazda3 sits lower and is a bit shorter than previous models, which assists with efficiency, but shoulder room for front and rear passengers was increased(4), which improved comfort and daily drivability.

It takes more than just good design to earn these awards, though. The Mazda3 carries some new technologies as well, like i-ELOOP, which comes from "intelligent energy loop." This regenerative system converts the car's kinetic energy to electrical energy when the accelerator is released. The electricity is then used to power the headlights, climate controls and stereo(4).

The Mazda3 also uses simple technology to make a big difference, such as active grille shutters in front of the radiator. These shutters automatically open and close depending on driving conditions and engine load to improve aerodynamics or air flow to the engine as needed(4).
