North Carolina Modernist Houses.com Launches Expanded Masters Gallery

    DURHAM, NC, February 16, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH), the award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting Modernist residential design, has updated the NCMH Masters Gallery. With these updates and additions, the NCMH Masters Gallery is America's largest open digital archive of Modernist houses, as well as the internationally known Modernist architects who designed them.

Started in 2009 with the most well-known Modernists, such as Frank Lloyd Wright and John Lautner, the NCMY Masters Gallery has expanded to over 30 architects with extensive house histories and over 10,000 photos.

The Masters Gallery is an extensive, easily searched record of the International Modernist movement in residential architecture, including the works of: Alvar Aalto, Helena Arahuete, Mario Botta, Marcel Breuer, Eduardo Catalano,Alden Ball Dow, Frank Gehry, Walter Gropius, Charles Gwathmey, Harwell Hamilton Harris,Philip Johnson, Louis Kahn, Raymond Kappe, Pierre Koenig, Rem Koolhaas, Tom Kundig, John Lautner, Le Corbusier, George Matsumoto, Richard Meier, William Morgan, Richard Neutra, Ralph Rapson, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, Rudolph Schindler, Raphael Soriano, Edward Durell Stone, David Thorne, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright.

According to NCMH founder and director George Smart, the Masters Gallery "serves as a central national resource for preservation. Even some owners of Modernist houses often are completely unaware of a house's history and architect. And because Modernist design is so vulnerable to criticism, marginalization, and destruction, it became critical to start documenting them on a more detailed, extensive, and open scale than ever before.

The Masters Gallery "preserves the histories of these houses and their architects, much of it gathered in one place for the first time," Smart said.

A North Carolina native, George Smart has witnessed the destruction of many Modernist houses in his state, including the iconic Eduardo Catalano House (1954-2001), named by House and Home Magazine as 1956's House of the Year.

"I must warn fans that the Masters Gallery is pretty intense," Smart noted. "We have about 65 gigabytes of content, all accessible to the public. There are just so many incredible houses to see, you can spend hours online here. And many people do. It's quite addictive in a good way."
