Vein Treatment Center Medicus Veincare Shares Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Recognizing the early signs and symptoms of varicose veins ensures prompt and effective diagnosis and treatment. To help you, Medicus Veincare shares some of the main signs, symptoms and treatment options for this disorder.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL, February 24, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Varicose veins are large, swollen, bulging veins that are caused by weakened valves, resulting in blood not being pumped properly and instead accumulating in the veins. Varicose veins are very common and can affect anyone, anywhere. While varicose veins are often asymptomatic and painless, they can cause a number of symptoms, including swelling of the legs, cramping, aching, pain and itching around the veins, and these usually worsen as the day progresses. In more severe cases, dermatitis can ensue, and ulcers may be formed in the affected areas.

Signs of varicose veins include raised, clearly visible, dark purple or blue veins, as well as discoloration of the surrounding skin. Spider veins are smaller, superficial veins that are red or blue in color and commonly found on the legs and face.

Treating Varicose Veins

According to Dr. Steven Tidwell from Medicus Veincare, who is an expert in this field, there are a number of effective, minimally invasive methods currently available for treating varicose veins and spider veins. One such treatment is endovenous laser ablation, in which (under local anesthesia) a thin laser is inserted into the vein and delivers laser energy, resulting in shrinking of the veins and closing of the faulty valves. Another method is sclerotherapy, in which a solution is injected into the affected veins, causing them to shrink. There are also non-invasive alternatives, such as cutaneous varicose vein laser treatments, which work by applying localized heat to the veins, causing the blood to clot and the vein to break down and disappear. Veinwave uses microwave energy to eliminate veins that are too small to inject.

All of these treatments are very safe and generally very effective.

"Accurate and timely diagnosis is the key to successful intervention of varicose veins" explains Dr. Tidwell, M.D. "If you suspect varicose veins or spider veins, even if they are not symptomatic at the moment, make an appointment with us to discuss your options."
