Christine Anne Alexander Has Written Extensively on the Brontes, Especially on their Early Writings

Christine has been a professor for 20 years and is a world authority on the work of the Brontes and on Literary Juvenilia, the youthful writings of authors like Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, May 19, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Christine Anne Alexander, Emeritus Professor (formerly Scientia Professor) with the University of New South Wales, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence as a researcher, writer and teacher in English literature.

As a world authority on the work of the Brontes, Dr. Alexander is known especially for her pioneering research on the early writings of Charlotte Bronte and on the Brontes and the visual arts. She has also been instrumental in establishing the new literary genre of Juvenilia, in the recovery and editing of manuscripts and the exploration of early literary creativity. Since 2002, she has been director and general editor of the Juvenilia Press, a nonprofit international enterprise promoting research in juvenilia and professional training for students in critical editing.

Dr. Alexander has always had a love of reading and researching, and this has driven her scholarship and teaching for the past 35 years. She completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, the latter earned with First Class Honours, at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, before studying for her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, U.K. She has been a full university professor in Australia for 16 years, and has travelled extensively overseas on a number of research projects. She has held a Senior Fellowship and grants from the Australian Research Council and the British Council; Visiting Fellowships at Duke University, University of North Carolina, Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Clare Hall, Cambridge; and a Library Fellowship at Princeton University. In 2007 she was the inaugural recipient of the Malcolm Bowie Distinguished Visiting Scholarship at Christ's College, Cambridge.

Dr. Alexander's 22 books include a British Academy prize-winning book on the "Early Writings of Charlotte Bronte," a ground-breaking critical work that was followed by a multi-volume "Edition of the Early Writings of Charlotte Bronte." Her book, "The Art of the Brontes," on previously unknown drawings and paintings, opened up another new interdisciplinary field of exploration. Her co-authored "Oxford Companion to the Brontës" is a major reference work with original feature essays, praised as "ground-breaking in its coverage...impressively academic and comprehensive book" ("Times Literary Supplement"). Her edition of the Brontes' "Tales of Glass Town, Angria and Gondal" attracted critical comment as "the stellar Bronte publication of the year" ("Bronte Studies," 2010). "The Child Writer from Austen to Woolf," which Dr. Alexander co-authored, was the first critical work on Literary Juvenilia. Her latest book is a new edition of Jane Austen's juvenilia, "Love and Friendship and Other Youthful Writings," to be published by Penguin in September 2014.

In 2003 Dr. Alexander was awarded a Centenary Medal for Service to Australian Society and the Humanities in the Study of English Literature. Among her many invitations to speak are public lectures at Harvard University, Durham University (UK), the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Armstrong Browning Library in Texas, Komazawa University in Tokyo, and the British Council in Naples.

Looking back, she attributes her successful career to her enthusiasm for literature. She is committed to passing on her skills in research, writing and editing to younger students and the wider reading community. She is Patron of the Australian Bronte Association and serves on school and university college councils. She plays an active role in the public sphere, speaking at a variety of local, national and international forums. In such instances her aim is to engender and foster a love of literature and to demystify university research.
