foodtweeks and Connecticut Food Bank Team Up to Help Solve Food Insecurity in America

Nutmeg State neighbors are excited to help hungry families close to home.

"foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week." - Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development.

STAMFORD, CT, June 17, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- foodtweeks, a free app that combines weight management with feeding the hungry, today announced that the Connecticut Food Bank in New Haven, CT has joined the ranks of foodtweeks -affiliated food banks.

Each time a foodtweeks user reports "tweeking" (cutting calories from their food), the Connecticut Food Bank will receive donations from foodtweeks, enabling the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families. Posting a "tweek" on Facebook or Twitter doubles or triples each donation.

"Connecticut Food Bank is delighted to work with foodtweeks to enable consumers to support our work and to provide nutritious food to people in need in a fun and effortless way, while also consuming fewer calories on a daily basis," said Nancy L. Carrington, President & CEO of Connecticut Food Bank. "And foodtweeks aligns with our goal to promote healthy communities. A couple days of 'tweeking' allows us to provide a full nutritious meal to a hungry family."

foodtweeks makes it possible for weight-conscious consumers to be "heroes" who serve their communities by feeding the hungry. There is no sacrifice of time or money. They need only cut calories from the foods they make everyday using the app, and they can participate in the cause of helping the hungry.

The app is powered by users who tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing and then the app instantly displays images of suggested "tweeks" that remove enough calories to make a positive difference. The best part is that cutting these calories and donating them to the hungry does not change the taste or leaves users hungry.

By maintaining a crowd-sourced picture database of more than 44,000, foodtweeks shows small changes in food choices,"tweeks", in everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain, to grocery store purchases, or homemade dishes of any kind.

"foodtweeks is really pleased to add the Connecticut Food Bank to our growing network of food banks," said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. "Based in our own home state, the Connecticut Food Bank provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community, and we are looking forward to partnering with our neighbor."

"foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week," said Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks may contact Ms. Shannon by email at [email protected].
