foodtweeks Fights Hunger with The North Texas Food Bank

Free mobile app feeds families in North Texas through users.

"The North Texas Food Bank is proud to partner with foodtweeksTM to help promote healthier communities," said Jan Pruitt, North Texas Food Bank President and CEO.

STAMFORD, CT, July 01, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- foodtweeks, a free app that combines weight management with feeding the hungry, announced that the North Texas Food Bank has joined the ranks of foodtweeks-affiliated food banks.

foodtweeks will help support the 13 counties in North Texas that are served through the North Texas Food Bank by encouraging the foodtweeks users to report "tweeking" (cutting calories from their food). Once the user has chosen a better option for the food they are about to eat, foodtweeks will enable the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families as the calories that were saved from the food of a user.

"foodtweeks is proud and excited to support the North Texas Food Bank," said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. "The North Texas Food Bank is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community."

Serving over 62 million nutritious meals last year to families who are struggling, the North Texas Food Bank has a tremendous impact on its community. Partnering with foodtweeks will make it easy for weight conscious consumers to serve their community and cut calories out of any meal, simply by using the free app. Through a unique way of weight management and engaging consumers to make responsible and creative choices with their food, foodtweeks donates calories to a food bank on behalf of its users, helping to feed those in need.

"The North Texas Food Bank is proud to partner with foodtweeks to help promote healthier communities," said Jan Pruitt, North Texas Food Bank President and CEO. "foodtweeks is helping hungry families in North Texas gain access to nutritious food, and we appreciate this support of our mission."

Users tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing, and the app instantly displays images of suggested "tweeks" that remove enough calories to make a positive difference - but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves user hungry. foodtweeks can be used in restaurants, grocery stores and cooking in the home to provide ways to serve the community and remove calories in any situation.

In a further effort to encourage users to donate calories, posting a "tweek" on Facebook or Twitter doubles or triples each donation and spreads awareness to friends who can also use the app to feed families who are food-insecure. By maintaining a crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to "tweek" everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger to homemade lasagna, foodtweeks has become an appealing and useful tool for a dual purpose.

foodtweeks is a product of Walker Health Labs, designers of surprising commercial solutions that also make a difference for big social problems.

"foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week," said Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks may contact Ms. Shannon by email at [email protected].

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.

foodtweeks is a free mobile phone app that helps people better manage their weight while feeding the hungry at the same time. Its goal is to change the way people view their food while ending food insecurity in America.
