STAMFORD, CT, July 29, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York in Latham, NY has become a foodtweeks affiliated food bank in a nationwide network of food banks that will gain donations from the free app.

Combining weight management with feeding the hungry, foodtweeks donations are fueled by users. Each time a foodtweeks user reports "tweeking" (cutting calories from their food), the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York will receive donations from foodtweeks , enabling the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families.

foodtweeks has a goal to create healthier communities by helping consumers make better choices and by helping those who might have otherwise gone hungry, gain access to nutrition. Encouraging the community to become active participants in hunger relief, while cutting calories from their favorite foods in an easy, enjoyable way, foodtweeks has developed a unique way to combine these two initiatives.

"The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is excited to work with foodtweeks to enable people to help us alleviate hunger in an effortless way while also consuming fewer calories on a daily basis," said Mark Quandt, the Food Bank's Executive Director. "A few simple tweeks a day will allow us to provide nutritious meals to hungry families in our community."

As the only organization of its kind in Northeastern New York, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York covers 23 counties and distributes over 30 million pounds of food a year. The donations from foodtweeks will support their efforts and help reach the approximately 244,400 people that receive food from the food bank yearly.

"foodtweeks is proud and excited to support the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York," said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks Executive Vice President of Partnership Development." The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community."

The creation of the foodtweeks unique approach to weight management came from the Walker Health Labs, designers of surprising commercial solutions that also make a difference for big social problems. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing and the app instantly displays images of suggested "tweeks" that remove enough calories to make a positive difference - but not in a way that changes the taste or leaves users hungry.

Because the creators wanted to make a big difference in the lives of the users and those struggling families who need assistance from food banks, foodtweeks maintains a crowd-sourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to "tweek" everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain to grocery store purchases, and homemade dishes of every kind.

foodtweeks is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week, according to Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks may contact Ms. Shannon by email at [email protected].

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.
