Some Collection Letters Charge Florida Consumers Illegal Fees and Costs

Tampa Attorney Ryan Hasanbasic says many consumers don't realize the collection fees they are being charged are illegal

TAMPA, FL, August 25, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Debt collectors regularly include "collection fees" in letters, which typically do not raise eyebrows with consumers. In fact, many people pay the collection fees along with the debt because they are afraid of a lawsuit or harm to their credit if the fees are not paid. What those consumers don't know, however, is that the collection fees being charged are often illegal.

"We often see collection agencies violating the law and it goes unchecked until we get involved" says debt fighter Ryan Hasanbasic, Esq. "One violation that has recently come up over and over again is collection companies charging collection fees for telephone and internet bills, like AT&T bills for example, when the consumer's contract did not call for such charges. Unfortunately, the consumer often doesn't know that the collection fees are illegal until they speak with us."

It's a violation of the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to add unauthorized collection fees or interest charges. According to the Federal Trade Commission, debt collectors may not resort to unfair practices when they attempt to collect a debt such as trying to tack on interest, fees or other charges unless the contract that created the debt specifically authorizes such charges. Often consumers are unaware of the specifics of the contract until they speak with experienced lawyer.

The Florida Debt Fighters pursue claims at no out-of-pocket costs to the consumer and, if successful, may be able to stop the collection attempts and recover money for the consumer.
