NEW YORK, NY, October 31, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- We announce the opening of the New York International School, a new PreK-5th Grade independent, coeducational and non-denominational school providing a global education to American and international students in New York. The school is established by The British Schools Foundation, one of the leading international school organizations, with a global network of schools spanning 3 continents and 10 cities.

The opening event to announce the first U.S. Based school in the network will be on November 1st, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the future residence of the school, the Church of the Heavenly Rest on 4 East 90th Street New York, NY 10128. An informal, family-friendly informational meeting will be held to introduce the New York community and press to The New York International School. The event will feature light refreshments and entertainment for children and families while introducing the parents to the educational opportunities that this new establishment will offer students.

The event will be hosted by The British Schools Foundation's Board of Governors, The New York International School's Advisory Committee, and the Heads of Schools of The British Schools Foundation's global network. Details of the members and speakers are provided below.

NYIS will open progressively in 2015 with Pre-K (ages 2-5) and 2016 through 5th grade (ages 6-10). The school is already accepting applications for both Preschool and Lower School, and it intends to gradually expand every year in order to eventually become a Pre-K - 12th grade school. The campus is located on the Upper East Side at 4 East 90th Street, by Central Park and 5th Avenue's Museum Mile. The building belongs to the Church of the Heavenly Rest and is occupied by Trevor Day School until July 1st of 2015.

The school's curriculum combines the highest academic standards and an innovative dual language immersion program in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. Rigorous and challenging, the aim is that students attain their full academic potential, develop as global citizens and achieve dual language fluency by the time they graduate. It integrates the American curriculum and an international vision, ensuring that students can progress to top schools and universities in the US and anywhere in the world.

Approximately two thirds of instruction will be done in English and one third in either Spanish or Chinese with highly qualified native teachers, with second language instruction beginning as early as age 2. The global experience and language program will be enhanced with an international peer program which will allow lower school students to develop relationships with students at BSF sister schools in Spain and China and with a future international exchange program for older students.

The New York International School will combine modern and innovative child-friendly pedagogy with traditional values, balancing a nurturing environment that fosters student participation and critical thinking with high standards of conduct. Small class sizes limited to a maximum between 12 and 16 with both a head teacher and a teacher assistant per class help reach a low student-teacher ratio and provide a more child-centered and personalized education.

The school will be governed by The British Schools Foundation (BSF)'s Board of Governors and assisted by the New York International School (NYIS) Advisory Board. The BSF Board is headed by BSF's Chairman Mr. Stewart Fry, BSF's Co-Founder Mr. John Ordovas, BSF's CEO Mr. Ola Natvig and NYIS's Executive Director Mr. Carlos Usle. The NYIS Advisory Board consists of Mr. Eric Widmer, former Head of Deerfield Academy, Mr. Jean-Marc Juhel, current head of Buckley Country Day School, Mr. Carl Lu, board member of the Chinese International School in Hong-Kong and former Asia CEO of Laureate Education, Mr. Nazee Batanghelidj, former president of Hoegh Capital Partners, and Reverend Matt Heyd, current rector of the Church of Heavenly Rest. The NYIS board is currently in the process of appointing the Head of School.
