    CHARLESTON, SC, January 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert J. Adams, M.S., M.D., University Eminent Scholar, Professor of Neuroscience, Director of the South Carolina Stroke Center of Economic Excellence and Director of the REACH MUSC Stroke Network , has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in neurology research and clinical care delivery in stroke neurology.

Dr. Adams, formerly the Presidential Distinguished Chair, Regents Professor of Neurology, and Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular Section in the Department of Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, moved to MUSC in 2007 and assumed the titles of University Eminent Scholar, Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the South Carolina Center for Economic Excellence in Stroke.

He is co-founder of REACH Health Inc., Alpharetta Georgia, a corporation that provides system equipment, software and decision support for urgent specialist consultations for stroke and other emergency conditions via the Internet. He served from 2005-2006 as a chief medical consultant for this company, which brings expert experience to remote sites to assist in emergency evaluation and treatment of acute stroke.

His extensive research experience includes 4 NIH investigator-initiated grants. He co-designed and directed two multicenter clinical trials, STOP and STOP II, which were the first randomized clinical trials of stroke prevention in sickle cell disease and in any childhood stroke condition. Dr. Adams has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, including three original publications in the "New England Journal of Medicine," and numerous book chapters and reviews, and has participated in guideline and scientific statement development on various aspects of stroke management through the AHA/American Stroke Association, the American Academy of Neurology and National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. His primary research activities are in stroke prevention and novel delivery programs of stroke care. He has delivered countless presentations and lectures.

Dr. Adams completed one residency with University Hospital of Arkansas and his neurology residency in the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta's, Department of Neurology. Dr. Adams also completed an internship with University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock and earned his MD from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, with Distinction in Neurophysiology in 1980. He earned a Master of Science in Engineering Design and Economic Evaluation from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Saint Louis University.

Dr. Adams is a Certified Diplomate with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has a Vascular Neurology Certification. Recently inducted into Worldwide Registry, he has also had affiliation with the American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, American Neurological Association, and American Society of Hematology. He is a former chair of the Stroke Council Leadership Committee, past chair of the Stroke Advisory Committee of the American Stroke Association, a former member of the Board of Directors of AHA and past chair of the South Carolina Stroke Systems of Care Legislative Study Committee.

Reach MUSC Stroke Network has 15 partner sites and since 2008 has delivered over 5800 urgent stroke consultations using the REACH Health Platform, an internet based program with HIPPA compliant audio, visual and data linkage between remote emergency rooms and 10 stroke experts based at MUSC.

He has been named among America's Top Doctors from 2001 to 2007 and received the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association in 2006 for his leadership at the national level in the development of the JCAHO Primary Stroke Center Certification program. In 2005, Dr. Adams received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Clinical Sciences from the Faculty Senate of the School of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia, and in 2004, he received the Distinguished Service Award for Chairing the American Stroke Association Stroke Advisory Committee.

His patents include Patent #4525320, a telemedicine stroke care delivery system, and the "Surrobot" patent pending filed 9/13. The Surrobot is a head-mounted system for providing inspection, evaluation or assessment of an event or location.

For his work in the tele medicine arena, he received the Lewis W. Blackman Patient Safety Champion Award in the Caregiver category from the South Carolina Hospital Association, presented in Columbia, SC. March 17th, 2010.

In 2012, he founded South Carolina Science Solutions, LLC, to develop an invention to facilitate ambulatory tele-presence.
