Known as a revolutionary in medical transplantation and advanced oncology surgery, Dr. Ciancio has distinguished himself over three decades as a renowned physician in the field of transplantation and urology. Dedicated to helping others, he has traveled the world to establish kidney transplant programs, organ donation programs and perform urologic and oncological surgeries. In the U.S., he has served as President of the Urologic Society for Transplantation and Renal Surgery, Senator for the University of Miami, Director of the Miami Transplant Institute, Chief Medical and Academic Officer at the Miami Transplant Institute, and the Director of Urologic Transplant Surgery. For his specialized skills, advanced techniques and overall impact on these areas of medicine, Dr. Ciancio is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Miracle Maker Award (1997), the Dean's Senior Faculty Clinical Research Award (1999-2000) and the Honorary Citizen National Award (Italy, 2000), the Transplant Foundation Honoree Award (2001), the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Spirit Award (2002) for his contribution to health care. He was named the Best Doctor in America 2005-2006, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, and was selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. as a Top Doctor in Urology (2011 and 2014). In 2009, he was awarded with the Honor and Merit Award by the Haiti Transplant Foundation for performing the first kidney transplant in Haiti. Dr. Ciancio earned an MBA in health administration from the University of Miami. He completed a residency in general surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, as well as a residency in urology. Thereafter, he completed a fellowship in transplantation. To remain on the cutting edge of medicine, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is affiliated with the American Board of Urology and the American Urological Association.

Dr. Ciancio became involved in transplantation because he felt it was the best way that he could give back- quite literally. "I can remove something that is bad and then replace with something that is good," he noted in a recent interview, stating that urology gives him the ability to perform complex surgeries that not all physicians are qualified to complete. Gratified by his work, Dr. Ciancio plans to continue working for the University of Miami Health System.
