The research was led by associate dean of executive education Kim Cameron and published in The Journal of Applied Behavioural Science. She writes about the study: "When organizations institute positive, virtuous practices, they achieve significantly higher levels of organizational effectiveness, including financial performance, customer satisfaction, and productivity... The more the virtuousness, the higher the performance in profitability, productivity, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement."

Many times, leaders try to come up with new incentive schemes or benefit programs in order to boost employee engagement and productivity, find F-1 Enterprise. In reality however, employees perform better when managers treat them with human decency. "It sounds so simple, but this is all there is", say F-1 Enterprise. In fact, Cameron points out that leaders and managers should treat their subordinates with respect, trust and integrity. They should show they care by treating employees as friends, practice forgiveness, avoid blame and inspire others to find a greater meaning in work. F-1 Enterprise share their company vision: "Others don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Research psychologist and associate director of Standford's Center for Compassion and Altruism and Education Emma Seppala explains how Cameron's findings can integrate in the leadership methods of American businesses:

1. Balancing positivity and corporate culture

While it is important to secure a company's revenue stream, employee satisfaction is the key to success. F-1 Enterprise suggest that employee happiness should be integrated in a company's vision and managers should constantly show how much they care, for example by providing regular training, listening carefully, showing interest in their employees' lives and circumstances, paying out bonuses and incentives, organizing team days out etc.

2. Complete small acts of positivity and kindness

By implementing certain initiatives, companies have the opportunity to show their gratitude and can boost performance and productivity within a short period of time. F-1 Enterprise suggest the following to create happiness at work: team activities such as an hour Zumba per week, team lunch, doughnut day, offers for massages, competitions etc. "We at F-1 Enterprise spend every morning an hour in our 'Atmosphere room' where everyone learns together, has fun together and talks together. It boosts everyone's energy for the day."
