1. Know the company - all too often the strategy questions has been 'where should we grow?' as opposed to 'who are we going to be?' 3. Look outward - companies should conduct internal surveys to gain a better picture of its competitive makeup and opportunities.

4. Find enduring advantages - companies need to stay focused. Once a company has identified and refined their advantages, it must expand by directing capital investment towards them.
