Virginia Women's Center Welcomes The Newest Breakthrough In Women's Health Treatment

Richmond-based Virginia Women's Center adds innovative laser procedure, MonaLisa, to practice.

RICHMOND, VA, May 11, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Virginia Women's Center is adding a leading edge treatment to its practice to resolve vaginal health issues often caused by menopause. The MonaLisa, an in-office procedure that is virtually painless and requires no anesthesia, received FDA clearance in 2014.

Virginia Women's Center is one of the first practices in Virginia to offer the special fractional CO2 laser specifically designed to help postmenopausal women as well as breast cancer survivors. Performed in an office environment without the need for anesthesia and without pain or side effects, the MonaLisa delivers CO2 laser energy to the vaginal wall to promote vaginal mucosal revitalization and restore vaginal health. Patients undergo three treatments spaced six weeks apart, and each treatment time is less than five minutes.

"Recent studies show that patients treated with the MonaLisa Laser showed significant improvement in vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. In one study, 85% of women who had stopped having sexual intercourse due to vaginal atrophy were able to resume sexual activity," said Dr. Schraa, a Gynecologist with Virginia Women's Center. "Patients in these studies experienced no side effects or adverse reactions and in a study done in Italy, the MonaLisa was found to be safe and effective for use in cancer survivors. We are so excited to offer this innovative treatment to restore the vaginal health of women who suffer with vaginal atrophy."

There are approximately 250 thousand breast cancer diagnoses each year, which adds to a large portion of our population likely suffering in silence from a wide array of health concerns, including severe discomfort and painful sexual intercourse. While some promising treatments have come to market in recent years, many fail to deliver adequate relief and most are accompanied with severe side effects. For breast cancer survivors, most current treatments aren't an option due to the involvement of estrogen. MonaLisa is an excellent option for those who cannot receive estrogen therapy to treat their symptoms.

"MonaLisa is a real breakthrough for feminine health," said Dr. Wilbanks, a Gynecologist with Virginia Women's Center. "It offers a, quick and painless remedy for a medical condition with a large unmet need for an effective treatment option. Traditional treatments do not always prove effective, so I am grateful I am able to offer my patients an alternative."

MonaLisa allows for a functional restoration of the vagina, which helps attenuating symptoms related to vaginal atrophy, a common problem for women. Thanks to its action on factors that determine dryness, fragility and loss of mucosal elasticity, this treatment can eliminate troublesome itching, irritation and pain, which become particularly acute during intercourse. The interaction with laser is, in fact, the ideal method to stimulate the collagen contained in the vaginal walls for the rehydration and functional tissue restoration. Its beneficial action can contribute to improved self-confidence and restore intimacy.
