Knowing how to sell the product


The more a waiter knows the specials - the most expensive items on the menu - the more convincingly he can promote and sell them. The more people spend, the higher are service charge and tips.

Knowing how to sell themselves

"It is important that people trust you. In order to achieve this, you must find a connection with them. The better a waiter connects with and looks after their guests, the more he can sell and the higher his tips," say LMG Global Associates.

Being inventive and solving problems

Failure is not an option. Waiters make the impossible possible and improvise when they run out of something or a guest has a special request. Should a guest complain, a waiter that learns how to resolve an issue, stands up to mistakes and offers a quick resolution, earns appreciation from the customer and often more tips.

Being team players

LMG Global Associates say: "Everyone makes mistakes. Good waiters don't waste time blaming people but support their team when needed." They show appreciation for their colleagues.

Being used to being busy

Running a business, especially in the beginning, means being extremely busy and learning how to handle several things at the same time. "Good waiters know what to do in busy times. They stay calm, ensure everything around them runs passably smoothly and the customers are happy," explains LMG Global Associates.

Skills from waiting tables can be very handy to become a successful entrepreneur. However, there are similar jobs in retail, sales or hospitality that require the same attributes.
