NFL Lawsuit Settlement Delayed

Recent Appeal Will Delay NFL Lawsuit Settlement Payouts; Former Players Can Receive a Portion of Settlement Funding Now

"For former NFL players with debilitating injuries who are in need of funding right away, options are available."

SECAUCUS, NJ, May 19, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Atlas Legal Funding, a provider of no-risk legal funding, today announced that the NFL lawsuit settlement will be delayed after an appeal was filed by lawyers of former Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers player Craig Heimburger last week. Lawyers for Heimburger say they'll ask a federal appeals court to review a judge's decision last month to approve the deal in an attempt to halt the planned $1 billion settlement.

Appeal Will Delay Settlement Payments for Former Players

With an appeal in place, the details of the appeal will need to be heard and decided on before the settlement can be moved to the claims process. The exact amount of time that settlement payments will be delayed all depends on how quickly the appeal moves through the Federal Appeals Court system. The appeals process, which is proposed to take months in and of itself, will delay any monetary rewards for players.

Partial Settlement Payments Available to Players Now

For players who are injured and unable to work, a portion of settlement payments are available right away. Many former players involved in the lawsuit are now suffering from chronic illnesses as a result of their concussion-related injuries, including:

- Depression, mood changes, sleep disorders and other conditions
- Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease or ALS
- CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy)

Players currently suffering from these conditions are likely unable to work and are in need of funding in order to pay for life needs. These players can apply for legal funding to pay for life needs such as rent, mortgage payments, doctor bills, car payments, child support, groceries, utility bills, credit card bills, etc.

"An appeal can delay settlement disbursements for months -- or even years. Exact timing of the delays is difficult to estimate at this point, and will depend on how quickly the appeal moves through the Federal Appeals Court system," said Jeff Kahn, managing partner for Atlas Legal Funding. "For former NFL players with debilitating injuries who are in need of funding right away, options are available."
