Michele A. Whitham Litigates Computer Fraud and Abuse Cases

    BOSTON, MA, June 04, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michele A. Whitham, Esquire, Partner of Foley Hoag LLP, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in security law.

Ms. Whitham brings 27 years of professional experience and has been a partner in Foley Hoag LLP's Labor & Employment and Litigation Practice Groups since 1997. Throughout her career, she has built a comprehensive skill set that focuses on employment law, including crafting policies and procedures for managing employee relations, responding to employee misconduct (including computer fraud and abuse), developing information security policies and procedures, and addressing data thefts. In addition to litigating cases, she represents and advises employers in every aspect of the employment relationship. Her clients range from early stage technology companies to global businesses.

Building on her experience dating to 2005 in litigating and advising as to data thefts, systems breach and cyber-attack matters, Ms. Whitham founded and co-chaired Foley Hoag's Security and Privacy Practice Group. She conducts internal investigations of alleged employee misconduct and protects companies from internal and external threats to computer systems and proprietary information. Her work reflects advanced knowledge of computer forensic discovery and recovery techniques, and she has successfully litigated to interrupt cyber-attacks and identify cyber-attackers. Her knowledge of data privacy and security law is extensive.

In addition to her trial practice, Ms. Whitham has more than 25 years of ADR experience, having frequently acted as lead negotiator in direct and facilitated dispute resolution sessions, facilitated the resolution of a variety of multi-party disputes, and designed corporate dispute resolution mechanisms.

Looking back, Ms. Whitham, who was raised in an academic family, began her professional career as a member of the faculty in a multidisciplinary program at Cornell University, where she worked from 1976-1988. Her work was recognized as pioneering in two books published about the program, Common Fire: Lives of Commitment in a Complex World and Learning to Serve: Promoting Civil Society Through Service Learning. This time spent in academia, led her to add a law degree to her social science and education backgrounds, enabling her to take an active role in addressing the social issues she had long studied and taught about.

Ms. Whitham received a JD from Cornell University in 1988 (graduating Order of the Coif), a Master of Science in Human Development from Cornell University in 1987, a Master of Arts and Teaching from Cornell University in 1971, and a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University (graduating cum laude) in 1970. In addition to her degrees, she is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the Courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She was recently inducted into Worldwide Registry, maintains affiliations with the Board of Directors of Lex Mundi, the American Bar Association, the Boston Bar Foundation Society of Fellows and the Massachusetts Bar Association, and has served and continues to serve on various boards of directors. In recognition of her hard work and dedication, she has been honored over many years by the leading legal industry ratings agencies.
