KLAS Releases New Report On Clinical Documentation Improvement Ahead of Looming ICD-10 Deadline

CDI Solutions 2015: Moving Closer To Documentation Completion

"When the ICD-10 deadline hits on October 1, providers will have to flip the switch and use the more detailed codes in order to get paid," said Boyd Stewart, Research Director.

OREM, UT, September 19, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With the October 1 ICD-10 deadline less than a month away, KLAS published a report today, "CDI Solutions 2015: Moving Closer To Documentation Completion," that reviews physician adoption, clinical documentation specialist (CDS) productivity, chart completeness and impact on case mix index (CMI) by clinical documentation improvement (CDI) firms. The ICD-10 deadline is a major motivation as it requires providers to switch to more detailed coding standards.

The report found that providers using revenue cycle transformation consulting firms like Huron, Navigant and PwC report a higher impact on CDI outcomes than do clients of vendors providing both CAC and CDI technology, such as 3M, Optum360 and Precyse. PwC's strong physician training has earned them the highest score for an impact on changing physician behavior--one of the more challenging tasks in documentation improvement strategy.

"When the ICD-10 deadline hits on October 1, providers will have to flip the switch and use the more detailed codes in order to get paid," said Boyd Stewart, Research Director and report author. "Providers are striving to make sure the documentation is done in such a way that the correct codes can be pulled out. They are pushing for accuracy."

There were three key lessons providers shared with KLAS. Those lessons were the importance of more training, both up front and on an ongoing basis, better vetting of vendors and having physician buy-in as part of the process.
