San Fernando Valley Dermatologist, Dr. Peyman Ghasri, Comments on the Link Found between Psoriasis and Depression

Psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that can cause thickened patches of red or silvery scaly skin on the elbows, knees, face, scalp, hands and feet. Dr. Peyman Ghasri discusses the correlation between psoriasis and depression.

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA, October 13, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes the skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface, resulting in red, dry and itchy skin in some people. However, there is new research that links it to a higher risk of depression. Between three and four percent of the population in the United States currently suffers from psoriasis. In definition, psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that can cause thickened patches of red or silvery scaly skin on the elbows, knees, face, scalp, hands and feet. Psoriasis occurs when the body's immune system attacks healthy tissues, such as the skin cells. San Fernando Valley skin doctor, Dr. Peyman Ghasri, discusses the correlation between psoriasis and depression.

According to the study, 16.5 percent of psoriasis patients suffered from major depression due to their skin condition, as well as other psychiatric issues, such as anxiety and substance abuse. In addition, between 10 and 20 percent of them suffer from psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory form of arthritis. Although the reason for this link is unclear, some researchers believe that it may be due to the embarrassment and social anxiety associated with the potentially disfiguring disease.

This recent study analyzed information from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which included 351 patients with psoriasis and 968 with major depression. There was considerable overlap between the two groups, as those with a history of psoriasis were more likely to also suffer from major depression. However, this risk was not affected by the degree or extent of psoriasis.

Dr. Peyman Ghasri offers screenings and treatments for patients with psoriasis, and they can provide patients with greater resources for managing symptoms of depression. According to the study's authors, "Our study supports that all patients with psoriasis, regardless of severity, are at risk for depressive symptoms and may benefit from depression screening." Dr. Ghasri offers treatments for patients with psoriasis, as well as the general public. He also offers treatments for eczema, warts, skin cancer, acne, rosacea and moles. Cosmetic treatments include Juvederm, Radiesse, Botox, Dysport and Ultherapy skin tightening.
