Apple Orthodontix Dentist, Joel Skousen, Went to California, Ohio and Nicaragua and Brought Back a Compassionate Heart

Apple Orthodontix adds dental services to Wylie, TX orthodontic practice.

Treating the underserved populations taught me compassion. These people have always held a special place in my heart.

DALLAS, TX, October 24, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joel R. Skousen, DDS was always good at math and science and, as he tells it, health care was always at the top of his career list. But it wasn't until 2005-2007, when he served a church mission in California, that he became committed to becoming a dentist. He explains, "I really wanted to do something to better people's lives. Dentistry is one of those areas where you can make a difference and make lives better. But beyond that, my experiences in California taught me not to judge anybody by how they look or their life circumstances. I saw that showing compassion really made a difference."

In 2010, he went to Nicaragua to volunteer as a dental assistant. While there, he helped provide dental care for over 500 teens and young adults. This experience solidified his desire to become a dentist, and he entered dental school at The Ohio State University in 2011. During his last year, he completed his externships by working in underserved and special needs communities of Ohio. "I loved treating these patients. It helped me deepen my compassion for people with special needs. It was a really good experience, and I intend to continue that work," says Skousen.

"We're delighted to have Dr. Skousen join our team of dentists," said Apple CEO Chad Packard. "He shares our philosophy that providing expert patient care, not simply driving revenues, is our top priority. As we continue to grow the dental side of our business, we know Dr. Skousen will be a real asset. His volunteer experiences really impressed me. He brings great depth of character to his practice."

On joining Apple, Skousen said," I think there's a lot of growth potential with this company. Apple doesn't feel like a big dental firm. It's more family-oriented. I really enjoy working with Dr Kevin Coles, and Wylie is a very cool place to work. It's growing and becoming a big town, but it still has a rural, small town feel."

Dr. Skousen is currently working in the Wylie office of Apple Orthodontix & Dental at 2640 W FM 544. To make an appointment with Dr. Skousen or for more information, call 1-888-611 APPLE or go online to www.appleortho.com. Apple also provides full dental care in Rockwall and The Colony.
